Overview of EU's food contact metal packaging regulation

For food contact purposes, Metal packaging solutions in the European Union (EU) are regulated by Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004. This regulation sets out general safety requirements for all materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, as well as specific requirements for specific materials and substances, including metals.

Safety requirements for food contact metals

For metal materials and articles intended for food contact, the following requirements apply:

  • Materials and articles must not transfer their constituents to food in quantities that may endanger human health.
  • Materials and articles must not alter the composition of food in a way that may endanger human health.
  • Materials and articles must be of a suitable quality, design, and manufacture to allow safe use under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions of use.

In addition, for Food Contact Metal Packaging there are specific maximum levels established for migration of certain metals into food, such as lead and cadmium. These requirements are tending to the more toxic heavy metals that are generally not part of food contact metals that Trivium brings to the market.

It's important to note that the requirements may vary depending on the type of food contact material (e.g. different metal alloys, coatings, etc.), the type of food it comes into contact with (e.g. acidic or fatty food), and the conditions of use (e.g. temperature, time of contact). It's also important to comply with any additional requirements established by national regulations or by EU-specific provisions for certain foodstuffs.

Shared responsibility in food packaging supply chain

In the food contact or packaging supply chain, there is a shared responsibility for the safety of packaging. To establish compliance in the supply chain a Declaration of Compliance is generated by a supplier to the next actor in the supply chain. For any product that is to be in contact with food, this document can be requested through our Document Request portal.
