The steps we are taking to make our global operations as ecological and efficient as possible
Environmentally conscious facilities

We carry out ongoing initiatives specifically designed to limit our environmental impact across our manufacturing locations and supply chain. These encompass our four core environmental footprints: carbon emissions, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), water and waste. With environmental management systems in place at every one of our production facilities, we can closely track our performance and take continuous steps to improve our profile in the years to come.

Reducing carbon emissions

Trivium is committed to reducing our own carbon emissions as much as possible. That’s why we are constantly taking action across our plants – targeting energy efficiency, reducing gas and electricity consumption, and improving our processes and equipment.

Our consistency in meeting – and exceeding – our carbon emission reduction goals for two consecutive years gives us the confidence that we are well on track to meet our science-based targets by 2030.

Cutting down on carbon emissions through downgauging

Carbon emissions from our supply chain are significantly higher than those from our own operations. To meet our sustainability goals, we need to work with our suppliers to reduce our environmental impact.

In 2022, our collaboration with long-time steel supplier ArcelorMittal resulted in a new and improved steel grade for our easy-open ends (EOEs). Not only did this make our cans easier to open, but by reducing their thickness (downgauging) we also reduced the amount of material used, and therefore the carbon emissions along our supply chain.

We are already using this new steel in our can-making operations at Erfstadt (Germany), and are planning to roll it out to other plants over the next year.

Reducing gas consumption in Weißenthurm

The team at our Weißenthurm plant in Germany sought to improve their central heating system, which accounts for 25% of the plant’s energy consumption. They undertook several optimisation measures, including reducing flow temperature, enhancing insulation and fixing any faulty heaters.

These efforts resulted in significant gas savings of 1 GWh in the last quarter of 2022 – the equivalent of over 200 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This not only benefits the plant at Weißenthurm, but also significantly reduces the carbon footprint of Trivium's products.

Recovering heat in Moëlan-sur-Mer

A recently installed Regenerative Thermal Oxidiser (RTO) in our Moëlan-sur-Mer plant in France has a potential VOC removal efficiency rate of 97%. But operating it requires significant electricity and gas consumption.

Aiming to simultaneously reduce energy usage and VOC emissions, our team installed a heat exchanger between the RTO and the Draw Wall Ironing (DWI) make-up lines. This captures clean, hot air from the RTO and reuses it to heat up the DWI lines to the ideal temperature for our lacquering processes.

In total, the project has achieved an estimated energy reduction of 500MWh per year.
