This June, we chose to recognise Neurodiversity Pride as part of our ongoing commitment to make sure every type of mind is seen and valued for what they bring to our community.

At Trivium, we believe that the strongest teams are built from a diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and cognition. In the high-performance world of sustainable metal packaging, where quality, innovation, and precision meet, we’ve come to recognise the vital role that neuro-inclusion plays in supporting our workforce and strengthening how we tackle challenges.

Why it matters for the metal packaging industry

Our industry is being reshaped by sustainability demands, supply chain complexity, and increased political and economic uncertainty. We believe that inclusive, cognitively diverse teams are uniquely equipped to tackle these challenges. They solve problems creatively and can facilitate new pathways to innovation.

To tap into that, it’s important to make sure our spaces are accommodating to those whose brains work differently. As Tjerk Feitsma, Director of the Neurodiversity Foundation and Trivium collaborator, put it:

“Neurodiverse ways of thinking are not just something to accommodate, they are a source of innovation, resilience, and competitive advantage.”

We are committed to continuous learning and cultural integration. A workplace where our community can say: “This is what I’m great at, and here’s where I need support.” That openness, supported by clear communication and mutual respect, helps all employees thrive.

To ensure success, it’s important to approach this from a human-centred angle. For us, that meant using studies and diagnoses to provide insight while centring our efforts on the individual, recognising that no two people experience the world in the same way. Our goal is not to categorise but to build teams where differences are valued and leveraged.

What is it, and how can we navigate it?

Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in the ways people think, learn, and process information. Not to be confused with neurodivergence, which is an umbrella term that captures, amongst others, individuals who are autistic, have ADHD, dyslexia, or other cognitive profiles that diverge from neurotypical patterns.

Navigating that starts with awareness. For example, recognising that some people thrive in repetitive, highly structured tasks, while others excel in fast-paced, creative problem-solving. It’s important to acknowledge that there is a place for all these contributions within our community. It’s about how we can best match our talent to suited opportunities. What’s often seen as “accommodation” is inclusive management.

Inclusion in action

We began putting our intention into action over the past couple of years. In 2023, Trivium signed the Neurodiversity Pledge, committing to improve our approach to neuroinclusion every year. In 2024 we began working with the Bata Autism Association, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting individuals on the autism spectrum to bring autistic talent to our Spanish plant population.

Since then, our approach has evolved, and that’s why we share with you our baseline on how to start your neuroinclusion journey within your teams from our lessons learned:

  • Framing “accommodations” as smart team practices, not burdens- for example, flexible scheduling or task swapping that helps everyone perform better.
  • Practising clear and flexible communication, including preferred channels and work styles.
  • Designing tasks aligned to individual strengths- from repetitive, structured tasks to divergent thinking and ideation.
A call to our industry peers

We don’t claim to have all the answers, but we do believe in starting the conversation, sharing what we’re learning, and inviting others to join. If we as an industry want to lead in innovation and responsibility, we must first lead in how we value people, in all their uniqueness.

Let’s work together to make sure we bring the best in everyone because everyone contains what matters.
